The African Development Bank Group (AfDB) has announced the election of Dr. Sidi Ould Tah as its ninth President, marking a significant leadership transition in one of Africa’s most influential financial institutions.
Dr. Tah, who currently serves as the President of the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA), was elected President-Elect of the African Development Bank Group following a rigorous selection process involving the Bank’s Board of Governors. He will succeed Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, who has led the AfDB since 2015.
“I am humbled and honored to be elected President of the AFDB Group. I extend my deepest gratitude to all who supported me – regional and non-regional members of the Bank and the leaders and countries that they represent. This marks the beginning of a challenging yet inspiring journey—together, we will drive Africa’s transformation with unity, ambition, and purpose.” said Dr Tah
With a distinguished career in international finance and development, Dr. Tah brings a wealth of experience to his new role. Under his leadership, BADEA has witnessed a strategic transformation, enhancing its partnerships across the African continent and expanding its financing portfolio in key sectors including infrastructure, energy, and agriculture.
As the incoming President of the AfDB Group, Dr. Tah is expected to continue driving the Bank’s core mission of fostering sustainable economic development and social progress in its regional member countries. His tenure comes at a time when Africa is grappling with multiple challenges, including the impacts of climate change, food insecurity, and the urgent need for infrastructure development and job creation.
Stakeholders across Africa and the global development community have welcomed the announcement, expressing optimism that Dr. Tah’s leadership will strengthen the AfDB’s role as a catalyst for inclusive growth and pan-African integration.
Dr. Tah is set to officially assume office as the President of the African Development Bank Group after the conclusion of Dr. Adesina’s tenure.
