In a strategic move to revitalize the state’s economy and strengthen its industrial base, the Abia State Government has unveiled a new policy initiative that mandates the exclusive procurement of goods and services produced within the state.
The announcement was made on Monday during a media briefing in Umuahia, the state capital, by the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Prince Okey Kanu. According to the Commissioner, the new “Made-in-Abia Products Policy” is designed to prioritize homegrown products and services across all sectors, significantly reducing the state’s dependence on external sources.
“This policy, when fully implemented, will ensure that all goods and services that are available within the state are not procured from outside. It is a bold and deliberate step in response to the ongoing challenges of a fragile national and global economy, rising inflation, and supply chain disruptions,” Kanu stated.
He further explained that the initiative aligns with the government’s commitment to promoting local enterprise, creating jobs, and sustaining economic growth through internal production and consumption. “As a forward-thinking administration, the Abia State Government is intentional about the management of its local economy. We believe that boosting the local production of goods and services will serve as a catalyst for long-term economic sustainability,” he added.
The policy is expected to impact procurement processes across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) in the state, compelling them to source materials, services, and contracts locally where capacity exists. Stakeholders in the manufacturing, agriculture, and service sectors are anticipated to benefit from increased patronage and government support.
Economic analysts and local entrepreneurs have lauded the initiative as a timely intervention that could drive industrial growth, empower local businesses, and preserve wealth within the state.
The move comes as part of a broader economic reform agenda under the leadership of Governor Alex Otti, who has consistently emphasized the importance of transforming Abia into an industrial hub and self-reliant economy.
