In what is already being described as one of the most shocking and unprecedented outcomes in African football history, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially overturned the result of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final, declaring Morocco as champions following a forfeiture ruling against Senegal.
According to an official statement released by CAF’s Appeal Board, the Senegalese national team was found to have breached key tournament regulations, specifically Articles 82 and 84. The violations, described as serious misconduct, resulted in the forfeiture of the final match.

As a consequence, the highly anticipated final has now been officially recorded as a 3–0 victory in favour of Morocco. This ruling confirms the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football as the rightful winners of AFCON 2025, handing the North African side the prestigious continental title under extraordinary circumstances.
The decision marks a dramatic reversal of an earlier ruling by CAF’s Disciplinary Board, underscoring the gravity of the findings and the authority of the Appeal Board in determining final outcomes in disputes of this magnitude.
Despite being awarded the title, Morocco was not without fault. CAF also imposed sanctions on the Moroccan side for multiple infractions during the match, including crowd-related disturbances, inappropriate conduct by ball boys, and interference around the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review area.
Additionally, Moroccan midfielder Ismaël Saibari received a two-match suspension, one of which is suspended for misconduct during the encounter. A previously issued fine against the player was, however, rescinded.
This extraordinary ruling has sent shockwaves across the football world, igniting intense debate among fans, analysts, and stakeholders.
The decision not only alters the outcome of one of Africa’s biggest football spectacles but also raises significant questions about discipline, governance, and the enforcement of regulations at the highest level of the game.
As reactions continue to pour in globally, this controversial verdict is set to remain a defining moment in the history of the Africa Cup of Nations, one that will be studied and debated for years to come.
