Hon. Philip Agbese, the Deputy Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, has alleged that certain state governors are using coercive tactics to influence federal lawmakers’ stance on President Bola Tinubu’s Tax Reform Bills currently before the National Assembly. According to Agbese, some governors have gone as far as threatening to block lawmakers from receiving party nominations for the 2027 general elections if they support the proposed reforms.
Agbese disclosed this during a media interaction, emphasizing the determination of the House of Representatives to stand firm in its support for President Tinubu’s vision to revitalize the Nigerian economy through comprehensive fiscal reforms.
“These governors are attempting to intimidate members from their states,” Agbese stated. “They are threatening to withhold re-election tickets in 2027 if lawmakers back the bills. However, as representatives of the people, our allegiance lies with our constituents, not with the governors.”
Agbese reaffirmed the commitment of the legislative arm to the nation’s progress, stating, “As far as we are concerned in the House of Representatives, nobody can stop us from supporting President Bola Tinubu’s bid to reboot the economy. We are united across party lines to ensure the country works, under the leadership of Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.”
He also highlighted the intellectual rigor and independence of the current lawmakers, describing them as “progressive-minded and pro-Nigeria.” Agbese stressed that the House is focused on ensuring the proposed legislation benefits the electorate. “We were not elected by the governors. Our mandate comes from the people, and we will act in their best interests by supporting these bills unequivocally, wholeheartedly, and powerfully.”
In preparation for the upcoming debate on the tax reform bills, the lawmakers plan to engage Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal and Tax Reforms, along with other renowned tax experts. Agbese noted that copies of the bills have been distributed to all lawmakers to enable detailed study and informed contributions during legislative deliberations.
“This consultation will allow us to dissect and refine the bills to ensure they address the needs of the nation. We are committed to making informed decisions that prioritize economic growth and the welfare of our citizens,” Agbese concluded.
The Tax Reform Bills are part of President Tinubu’s broader strategy to restructure Nigeria’s fiscal landscape, attract investments, and stimulate economic recovery. While the bills have sparked debate, the House of Representatives appears resolute in its mission to foster economic progress through legislative action.
