The ancient town of Oyo witnessed a historic moment today as His Imperial Majesty, Ikú Bàbá Yeye, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, Alaafin of Oyo, successfully completed the sacred 21-day Ipebi rites, marking the official commencement of his reign as the custodian of Yoruba heritage and traditions.
The completion of the Ipebi rites is a significant milestone in the Yoruba monarchy, as it signifies the final phase of the coronation process, during which a newly installed king undergoes spiritual, cultural, and historical initiations. The revered rites, conducted in seclusion, prepare the monarch for his sacred duties as the Alaafin, the Aláṣẹ Ẹ̀kẹjì Òrìṣà (the next in command to the deities), and the paramount ruler of the Oyo Kingdom.

The conclusion of this solemn process was met with jubilation across the kingdom, with traditional chiefs, kingmakers, royal family members, and indigenes trooping to the Aafin Oyo (Alaafin’s Palace) to pay homage to the newly ascended monarch. The event was marked by cultural displays, drumming, and the chanting of royal praises as the people of Oyo reaffirmed their loyalty and prayers for a prosperous reign.

Dignitaries, Yoruba traditional rulers, and well-wishers from across Nigeria and beyond have continued to send congratulatory messages to the Alaafin, praying for his reign to be one of peace, progress, and prosperity for the Oyo Kingdom.

“Ikú Bàbá Yeye, Alàṣẹ Ẹ̀kẹjì Òrìṣà! May your reign be long, peaceful, and abundantly blessed,” echoed the sentiments of the people as Oyo embraced a new era under the leadership of Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade 1.
