In a significant development within Nigeria’s security establishment, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has removed Kayode Egbetokun from his position as Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and appointed Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Olatunji Disu as his successor.

Sources within the Presidency disclosed that Egbetokun’s removal followed a directive by the President during a high-level meeting held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday, where he was reportedly asked to resign his appointment.
The development signals a major shift in the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF). Although an official statement from the Presidency was still being awaited as of press time, senior officers within the police high command confirmed the change, describing it as a “decisive transition” aimed at strengthening the nation’s internal security framework.
“It is confirmed; AIG Tunji Disu is the new IGP. An official announcement will be made to the public soon. The transition is already in motion,” a top-ranking officer disclosed.
Prior to his elevation, Disu served in several strategic capacities within the Force. He was Commissioner of Police in Rivers State and previously headed the Intelligence Response Team (IRT), where he earned recognition for operational efficiency and professionalism in tackling organized crime and high-profile security cases.
The appointment comes at a critical time when the Federal Government is intensifying efforts to combat insecurity, banditry, kidnapping, and other criminal activities across various parts of the country.
Observers believe the leadership change may usher in renewed strategies and reforms within the police hierarchy.
Further details are expected as the Presidency formally communicates the decision to the public.
