In a significant move to pay tribute to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, the Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday.
The announcement, made through the Ministry of Interior today, is intended to allow Nigerians to reflect on the legacy of the former President, who passed away recently in London.
According to the statement, the day will be observed nationwide as a mark of respect for Buhari’s contributions to national development, his decades-long service in public life, and his role in shaping Nigeria’s democratic journey.
The government also revealed that special prayers and commemorative events will be held across the country, with a national remembrance ceremony planned in Abuja, which will be attended by top government officials, political leaders, and foreign dignitaries.
Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s Head of State from 1983 to 1985 and later as a democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023, is remembered for his anti-corruption stance, efforts to strengthen national security, and attempts at revamping the economy.
Further details on the holiday observance and official events will be released by the Presidency in due course.
