In a stark warning, General Christopher Mustapha, the Chief of Defence Staff, has denounced the act of displaying Russian flags in Nigeria as a treasonable offense. This declaration was made following an urgent security briefing with President Bola Tinubu at Aso Rock.
Addressing the media, General Mustapha emphasized the severity of the situation, stating that the law would inevitably address those involved in such acts. He condemned the recent displays of foreign flags within Nigeria’s borders, labeling them as completely unacceptable.
“We convened this emergency session to brief Mr. President on the ongoing disturbances,” General Mustapha revealed. “What initially appeared as a peaceful protest has, regrettably, been hijacked by individuals intent on inciting chaos. The situation has deteriorated, with rampant looting and criminal activities emerging.”
The Defence Chief expressed grave concern over the sight of foreign flags being flown, stressing that this act undermines Nigeria’s sovereignty. “The President and I are unequivocal: flying any foreign flag in Nigeria is a treasonable offense and will be treated as such. We will not tolerate anyone being manipulated into committing these acts,” he asserted.
Furthermore, General Mustapha addressed the issue of coup attempts, affirming the military’s commitment to upholding democratic principles. “Nigeria is a democratic nation, and all security agencies are dedicated to preserving this democracy. We will not stand idly by while attempts are made to alter our government through unlawful means.”
The General also highlighted the involvement of young individuals being exploited for these acts, revealing that authorities are investigating those orchestrating these actions. “We are tracking those behind the scenes who are fueling this unrest,” he noted.
In conclusion, General Mustapha reiterated the military’s readiness to intervene decisively if necessary. “The President has made it clear that any attempt to disrupt Nigeria’s peace will not be tolerated. We stand united in our commitment to safeguard the nation’s stability and will take all necessary measures against those who overstep these boundaries.”
The message from the Defence Chief underscores the government’s determination to protect Nigeria’s democratic values and national integrity amidst ongoing unrest.
