Lagos is set to come alive with colour, culture and centuries-old tradition as the Oba of Lagos, His Royal Majesty Alaiyeluwa Oba Riliwan Babatunde Osuolale Aremu Akiolu I, has officially announced that the iconic Eyo Festival will hold this year, commencing on December 27, 2025.
The declaration, made from the Iga Idunganran Palace, has sparked excitement across Lagos and beyond, as the Eyo Festival—also known as the Adamu Orisha Play—remains one of the state’s most revered cultural spectacles. Held only at the special directive of the Oba, the festival is reserved for historically significant moments, making each edition a rare and momentous celebration.

The festival will once again showcase the majestic procession of the white-clad Eyo masquerades, who will glide through the streets of Lagos Island wielding their traditional opambata (staff). Their rhythmic chants, graceful dances and symbolic gestures embody the spirit and ancestry of the Isale-Eko people, while promoting peace, unity and cultural pride.

With thousands of visitors, cultural enthusiasts and global tourists expected to attend, the 2025 edition promises to reinforce Lagos’ position as a leading hub for heritage and tourism. Preparations by the palace, traditional groups and relevant government agencies are already underway to ensure a vibrant, safe and memorable celebration for all.
