The Lagos State Government has officially confirmed that the recent outbreak of severe gastroenteritis in the state is caused by cholera. This confirmation follows a series of laboratory tests conducted after a significant number of residents reported symptoms consistent with the disease.

In response to the outbreak, the Lagos State Public Health Emergency Operations Center (EOC) has been activated. This strategic move is aimed at coordinating a comprehensive response to contain the spread of the infection and mitigate its impact on the populace.

Health officials have urged all residents to support the government’s efforts by strictly adhering to recommended personal and environmental hygiene practices. Key measures include ensuring the cleanliness of drinking water, proper disposal of waste, and maintaining overall sanitation in their surroundings.

Dr. Akin Abayomi, the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, emphasized the importance of community cooperation in tackling the outbreak. “Cholera is a highly contagious disease that spreads through contaminated water and food. We are calling on all residents to boil water before drinking, wash their hands frequently with soap and clean water, and avoid eating food from unverified sources,” he stated.

The EOC is working around the clock to monitor the situation, provide medical assistance to those affected, and disseminate crucial information to the public. Mobile health units have been deployed to affected areas to offer immediate treatment and educate residents on preventive measures.

The state government reassures the public that all necessary resources are being mobilized to bring the outbreak under control. Citizens are encouraged to report any suspected cases of cholera to the nearest health facility promptly.

As Lagos grapples with this public health challenge, the collaboration between the government and the residents is deemed vital in preventing further spread and ensuring the safety and well-being of all.
