The Governor of Ebonyi State, His Excellency Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, has sparked a national conversation on the need for reforms in Nigeria’s educational system. Speaking passionately during an engagement on January 3, 2025, Governor Nwifuru disclosed that all his children are currently studying within the country, specifically in Ebonyi and Enugu states, with their highest school fees being N35,000.
The Governor revealed this during a discussion at the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, where his peers expressed surprise at his decision. “I am the only governor in Nigeria presently whose children are schooling in the country, and not even beyond the Southeast. Three of them are in Ebonyi and two in Enugu. Their biggest school fees are N35,000,” he said.
Governor Nwifuru further contrasted his choices with those of some of his government officials, revealing that some commissioners in his administration pay over ₦2 million per term for their children’s education in elite schools. He highlighted the unsustainability of such expenses, noting that it is unimaginable for him to spend over ₦5 million per term on education.
“Where will I get the money to continue paying such fees after my temporary tenure as governor? I don’t want to develop high blood pressure during the time I should be resting,” he stated, emphasizing the need for prudence and planning for life after public office.
Governor Nwifuru called for collective efforts to reposition the country’s educational system, focusing on addressing deficiencies that compel many Nigerians to send their children abroad for studies. “We must join hands to transform our educational system. It starts here in Ebonyi State. We need to fix what is lacking so that our schools can rival international standards,” he affirmed.
The Governor’s remarks have drawn widespread reactions, with many commending his commitment to promoting and strengthening local education while setting a personal example for others in leadership positions.
As part of his administration’s plans, Governor Nwifuru reiterated his resolve to invest in the development of public schools in Ebonyi State, ensuring they are equipped to meet global standards. This move aligns with his broader vision of prioritizing education as a cornerstone for sustainable development in the state and the country at large.
Governor Nwifuru’s advocacy underscores the urgent need for policy reforms that make quality education accessible and affordable for all Nigerians, regardless of social status.
