Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) earlier today reportedly attempted to arrest former Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, upon his return to Nigeria.

According to sources, EFCC officials approached the former governor shortly after his arrival and sought to take him into custody. However, El-Rufai was said to have resisted the move, insisting that he would not accompany the operatives without a formal written invitation or warrant stating the grounds for the action.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that the situation created a brief moment of tension at the airport, as the former governor maintained that due process must be followed. He reportedly argued that as a law-abiding citizen, he was willing to honour any lawful invitation extended to him through appropriate channels.
Despite his refusal to go with the operatives, EFCC officials are said to have seized El-Rufai’s international passport, effectively restricting his immediate travel pending further engagement with the anti-graft agency.
As of the time of filing this report, the EFCC has not issued an official statement clarifying the circumstances surrounding the attempted arrest or the reasons for the passport seizure.
Likewise, there has been no formal reaction from El-Rufai’s media team.
The development has sparked discussions within political and public circles, with observers calling for transparency and adherence to the rule of law as the matter unfolds.
