In a landmark moment for sports development in Nigeria, Enugu State has officially signed the Host State Agreement with the Federal Government, securing the full hosting rights for the 2026 National Sports Festival. The agreement was finalized today in a high-profile ceremony attended by key stakeholders, including the Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade.

Speaking at the event, the Governor of Enugu State reaffirmed the state’s readiness to deliver an unforgettable festival. “We are not just hosting; we are setting a new standard,” he declared, emphasizing the state’s commitment to providing a world-class experience for athletes, officials, and visitors alike.

To actualize this vision, the state government announced ambitious plans to establish a brand-new Games Village in Awgu, undertake comprehensive renovations of the iconic Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, and develop additional state-of-the-art sports infrastructure. These initiatives, the governor assured, would offer athletes and spectators a truly memorable experience while placing Enugu on the global map of sporting excellence.

With a history spanning over 115 years, Enugu is poised to showcase its rich heritage, unparalleled hospitality, and vibrant culture. The Governor highlighted the transformative potential of the festival, noting its capacity to drive tourism, attract investment, and catalyze socio-economic development across the state.

“This festival is more than a sporting event; it’s an opportunity to unite Nigerians, celebrate excellence, and leave a lasting legacy for future generations. Enugu will rise to the occasion and deliver an event that surpasses expectations,” the Governor added.

As the countdown to the 2026 National Sports Festival begins, Enugu State is not only preparing to host but also to set a new benchmark in the history of this prestigious event. The state’s strategic investments and unwavering dedication to excellence promise to make the festival an unforgettable celebration of sports, culture, and unity.
