The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has given the green light for the construction of state-of-the-art bus terminals in each of Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, in what is being hailed as a landmark intervention in the nation’s transport sector. The ambitious project, valued at ₦142 billion, marks the first time the Federal Government is directly investing in road transport infrastructure beyond traditional road construction.
The terminals will be strategically located in Abeokuta, Ogun State (South-West); Gombe, Gombe State (North-East); Kano, Kano State (North-West); Lokoja, Kogi State (North-Central); Onitsha, Anambra State (South-East); and Ewu, Edo State (South-South).
According to government officials, the selection of these locations was driven by economic viability, strategic connectivity, and their potential to serve as major transportation and trade hubs for their respective regions.
The modern bus terminals will feature passenger lounges, ticketing halls, commercial spaces, restrooms, dedicated loading bays, and technology-driven security and monitoring systems. They are also expected to integrate with other modes of transportation, providing improved linkages between cities and boosting interstate commerce.
Transport experts have described the initiative as a game-changer that could significantly reduce travel stress, improve passenger safety, and set a new standard for public transport operations in Nigeria.
The Federal Government has indicated that, once completed, the bus terminals will be operated under public-private partnership (PPP) arrangements to ensure efficiency, sustainability, and world-class service delivery.
Industry stakeholders are optimistic that the project will create thousands of jobs during the construction phase, stimulate local economies, and encourage private investment in the transport sector.
Construction is expected to commence later this year, with timelines and contractors to be announced following the completion of procurement processes.
