In response to the nationwide strike initiated by the Organized Labour on Monday, June 3rd, the Federal Government of Nigeria has reached several crucial resolutions following an intense negotiation session.

The strike, driven by demands for a revised National Minimum Wage (NMW), saw significant intervention from the Leadership of the National Assembly on June 2nd. This led to a high-level meeting convened at the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

After exhaustive deliberations, the following resolutions were reached:

1. Commitment to Increased National Minimum Wage
– The President of Nigeria, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, has pledged a commitment to establish a National Minimum Wage exceeding N60,000.

2. Continuous Negotiation
– To expedite the agreement on the new minimum wage, the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage will meet daily for the next week.

3. Labour’s Response:
– In respect of the President’s commitment, the Organised Labour will immediately convene a meeting to deliberate on this new development.

4. Protection Against Victimization:
– It has been assured that no worker will face retaliation or victimization due to their participation in the industrial action.

This pivotal meeting underscores the Federal Government’s dedication to addressing the concerns of the workforce while balancing national interests. The resolutions aim to foster a collaborative approach towards resolving the minimum wage impasse and ensure the protection of workers’ rights.

The agreement was formally documented and signed in Abuja on June 3rd, 2024, marking a significant step towards ending the strike and restoring normalcy.
