Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has issued a heartfelt address to the people of Lagos, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to the well-being and prosperity of the state. In his message, Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted the strength and resilience of Lagosians, rooted in their diverse cultural heritage, while addressing the recent calls for protests and the state’s response to various challenges.
Governor Sanwo-Olu began by acknowledging the vibrant spirit of Lagos, describing it as a “beacon of hope and resilience” that embodies the energy and brilliance of its people. He expressed concern over recent narratives that suggest protests aimed at ending what some term “bad government” could lead to non-constitutional changes. He emphasized that while the right to protest is a democratic right, it must be balanced with the need for stability and constructive dialogue.
“Is a protest the catalyst for progress we need now? Will it ensure our challenges vanish in ten days? Will it lower food prices or inspire economic growth? I strongly believe it won’t. Instead, it could undo the modest gains we’ve made,” Governor Sanwo-Olu stated. He underscored that the administration is actively addressing the issues faced by Lagosians, with substantial efforts being made to alleviate the economic and social challenges.
Highlighting recent national developments, the Governor pointed to President Tinubu’s recent legislative actions, including the signing of a new minimum wage into law and the disbursement of student loans to ease financial burdens. He also noted the granting of financial autonomy to local governments, aimed at improving governance efficiency.
In tackling the foreign exchange crisis, innovative measures such as the sale of crude oil to local refineries in Naira are projected to save the nation $7.9 billion annually and strengthen the currency. Additionally, the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) is attracting private investments, further supporting economic stability.
Governor Sanwo-Olu called for patience as these economic reforms take effect, stating, “Protests can’t achieve in days what economic reforms can in weeks and months. Our nation, under President Tinubu’s courageous leadership, is on the right path.”
At the state level, the Governor outlined several initiatives designed to cushion the effects of economic reforms on Lagosians. The EKOCARES program provides relief through discount markets, reduced transportation costs, and free medical care. The state has also increased bursaries and scholarships for students, ensured free education for new elementary students, and raised the salaries of state workers above the national minimum wage.
“We can do more, and we will,” Sanwo-Olu affirmed, expressing a strong commitment to furthering the welfare of all Lagosians.
Reflecting on the tragic events of the EndSARS protests in 2020, Governor Sanwo-Olu reminded citizens of the peaceful beginnings of the movement and the subsequent hijacking by elements that led to widespread destruction. He detailed the extensive damage to public properties, including the Lagos High Court, police stations, local government offices, and public transport infrastructure.
“Our goal is a peaceful and prosperous Lagos. We must avoid economic destabilization that can make us poorer. Let’s unite, embrace dialogue, and build a peaceful, prosperous Lagos,” the Governor urged.
To facilitate safe and peaceful expressions of grievances, the Lagos State Government has designated Gani Fawehinmi Park and Peace Park as approved venues for protests. These locations will be secured to ensure the safety of all participants and prevent any potential chaos.
In closing, Governor Sanwo-Olu called on all Lagosians to work together in unity, emphasizing that the city’s strength lies in its collective resolve to maintain peace and stability. He concluded with a hopeful note, “God bless Lagos State. God bless Nigeria.”
This address underscores the government’s dedication to addressing current challenges through constructive means and highlights the importance of unity and dialogue in achieving a prosperous future for all.
