In a major political realignment that is set to reshape the political landscape of Akwa Ibom State and reverberate nationally, Governor Umo Eno has officially announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking at a press briefing in Uyo on Friday, Governor Eno said his decision to switch parties was driven by “enlightened state interest” and the strategic need to align Akwa Ibom State with the Federal Government to accelerate development and unlock more opportunities for the people.

“Today, I announced my formal movement from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). My decision is driven by enlightened state interest and the need to align Akwa Ibom State with the Federal Government to attract more development and opportunities for our people,” Governor Eno stated.
He further noted that while political parties serve as platforms to secure electoral mandates, governance must go beyond partisanship and focus on unity, inclusiveness, and the collective well-being of the people.
“I have always believed that political parties are vehicles to get elected, but governance must be about unity, inclusivity, and shared values,” he added.
Governor Eno reassured citizens of Akwa Ibom that his core principles—transparency, bipartisanship, and people-focused leadership—remain unchanged.
“As I step into this new chapter, I remain committed to the values that have guided me throughout my public service: transparency, bipartisanship, and an unwavering focus on the collective good of Akwa Ibom. I assure you, my dear Akwaibomites, that I will continue to work tirelessly for our state’s growth, peace, and prosperity. Let us move forward together, united in purpose, driven by hope, and dedicated to building a stronger, more inclusive Akwa Ibom,” he said.
In a show of solidarity, a high-powered delegation of APC governors, led by the Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum and Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodimma, joined Governor Eno in Uyo to formally welcome him into the ruling party. The Progressive Governors lauded Eno’s bold step, describing it as a decision rooted in leadership foresight and commitment to the development of his people.

Governor Uzodimma, speaking on behalf of the APC delegation, said, “We are delighted to welcome Governor Eno into the APC family. His decision reflects a growing national consensus for unity, collaboration, and pragmatic governance. We are confident that Akwa Ibom, under his leadership, will benefit immensely from being aligned with the center.”

Governor Eno’s defection marks a seismic shift in the political configuration of Akwa Ibom, historically regarded as a PDP stronghold. Political watchers believe the move could set the tone for increased political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Reactions from both PDP and APC stakeholders are expected in the coming days as the ripple effects of this development continue to unfold.
