The Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, Engr. Sesan Olowa, has pledged his council’s support for the Nigeria Catchball Federation (NCF) in a move that could see a new sport take root in the fast-growing community.
Hon Olowa, who also doubles as the Chairman of the Conference 57, Lagos State, (Body of Local Governments in Lagos State), made the commitment on Monday during a meeting with NCF officials at the council secretariat in Sangotedo. The delegation was led by NCF President, Engr. Bola Babarinde, who presented Catchball as a game with the potential to transform youth and female participation in sports.

“Catchball is simple to set up, gender-friendly and opens doors for our youths to compete on international platforms,” Babarinde said. “It combines the excitement of volleyball, basketball, and handball but is easier to learn and play. Most importantly, it gives the girl child a space in sports.”

Initially questioning why Catchball should be considered in a football-loving community, Chairman Olowa said he was impressed by the Federation’s presentations, vision and assured them of immediate support.
“Ibeju Lekki is ready to explore new opportunities for our young people,” the chairman declared. “We will partner with the Federation, introduce the game to our schools and provide facilities and equipment to get it started.”

The partnership will also see the council issue an interim Letter of Partnership to NCF and roll out Catchball in both public and private schools, including Corona School. Plans are also underway to build infrastructure and host competitions that could put Ibeju Lekki on the international sporting map.

With backing from the Lagos State Government, the Presidency and international associations, Catchball is being positioned as Nigeria’s next big sport with Ibeju Lekki at the forefront of its growth.
