The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially notified Senator Natasha about the receipt of a recall petition against her, marking a significant step in the recall process. The Commission also confirmed that the petitioners’ representatives have now provided their contact details, including their address, phone numbers, and email addresses.
In an official statement issued by Sam Olumekun, the National Commissioner of INEC, the Commission disclosed that the next phase of the process involves a thorough review of the list of signatories submitted by the petitioners. This is to verify that the petition has been endorsed by more than half of the registered voters in the constituency, in line with the legal requirements for a recall.
“Further to the statement issued yesterday, Tuesday, 25th March 2025, the Commission hereby confirms that the contact address of representatives of the petitioners, their telephone numbers, and email addresses have now been provided in a letter addressed to the Chairman of the Commission, dated today, Wednesday, 26th March 2025,” the statement read.
Olumekun further stated that, as stipulated in Clause 2(a) of INEC’s Regulations and Guidelines for Recall 2024, the Commission has formally notified Senator Natasha about the recall petition. The notification has been delivered to her official address, while copies have also been sent to the presiding officer of the Senate and published on INEC’s official website.
The next stage in the process will be the verification of signatories, which is expected to take place in the coming days. According to INEC, this step will determine whether the petition meets the constitutional threshold, which requires the signatures of more than 50% of registered voters in the affected constituency.
“The outcome of this verification process will be made public and will determine the next steps the Commission will take,” Olumekun added, assuring Nigerians that INEC remains committed to an open and transparent process.
This development marks a crucial phase in the recall process, as it will determine whether the petition advances to the next procedural steps or is halted due to insufficient voter support. The coming days will be critical in shaping the outcome of this political development.
