Dr Muhammad who’s from Bauchi State has been rumoured to be the next Minister of Health under President Tinubu as he just resigned a plum job position to serve in the new administration.
Muhammad Pate resigned as CEO of Gavi Alliance, a public-private partnership that helps vaccinate half the world’s children against some of the world’s deadliest diseases, this was presumably done to accept a request to return home and contribute to the service of his home country, Nigeria.
Dr Pate had informed the Gavi Board Chair and Vice Chair that he has taken an incredibly difficult decision to accept a request to return and contribute to his home country, Nigeria.
The globally renowned medical professional is trained in both Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases from University College London. He has an MBA from Duke University while also having Masters in Health System Management from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, United Kingdom.
He presently serves as Professor of the Practice of Public Health Leadership in the Department of Global Health and Population at Harvard University while previously serving as the Global Director for Health, Nutrition and Population and Director of the Global Financing Facility for Women, Children and Adolescents (GFF) at the World Bank .
Dr Muhammad Pate had once served as former Minister of State for Health in Nigeria from 2011-2013 until he picked up a Professorship role at Duke University’s Global Health Institute, USA.
Muhammad Pate has an extensive career spanning over 10 years at the World Bank in Washington DC and held several senior positions including Senior Health Specialist and Human Development Sector Coordinator for the East Asia/Pacific Region and Senior Health Specialist for the African Region.
At the World Bank, a major project led by Pate was the far-reaching health sector reform programmes in Africa, East Asia and other regions of the World Bank which one of the most notable is his initiation of landmark Public-Private Partnership to replace a National Referral Hospital in Lesotho, Africa.
Dr Muhammad Pate would be making a huge sacrifice in choosing to serve his home country going by his decisions as he would be taking a steep pay cut as well as leaving other perks and privileges attached to such global job positions by opting for service to Nigeria which is welcoming as well as refreshing in a country needing selfless leadership at this crucial juncture of it’s journey in nation building.
