In the heart of Nigeria’s Kano State, a young genius named Sarki Abba defied all expectations, setting a remarkable precedent in academic excellence. Born and raised in Kano, Abba’s extraordinary intellect became evident during his time at Science Secondary School Dawakin Tofa.
In 1984, at just 16 years old, Abba achieved an almost mythical feat in his West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). He scored an astounding 9 distinctions, including 8 A1s and a solitary A2. This unparalleled performance was so extraordinary that examination authorities in Lagos were skeptical, suspecting foul play.
To verify the authenticity of his results, the authorities orchestrated a stringent retake of the exams. Abba was transported to Lagos, where he was required to re-sit all nine exams over the course of three grueling days, under intense supervision to ensure there was no possibility of cheating.
Once again, Abba’s brilliance shone through. He not only replicated his performance but surpassed it, achieving 9 A1s this time around. His previous A2 in English Language was upgraded to an A1, confirming his exceptional capabilities beyond any doubt.
The authorities, astounded and remorseful, publicly apologized to Abba and, in a move to honor such unparalleled academic prowess, instituted the National Merit Award. Sarki Abba was rightfully the first recipient of this prestigious award.
Abba’s academic journey continued to break records. By the 1989/90 school session, he graduated from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, as the OVERALL BEST Medical Student and the OVERALL BEST Graduating Student, at the remarkable age of 21.
Today, Sarki Abba’s legacy of excellence continues. He is a distinguished Professor of Urological Research and a Professor of Urology and Pathology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, USA. Additionally, he serves as the Co-Director of Cancer Global Health at the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University, Illinois, USA.
Sarki Abba’s journey from a prodigious teenager in Kano to an internationally recognized medical scholar underscores the limitless potential of human intellect and the transformative power of education. His story remains an inspiration, highlighting the profound impact of perseverance, integrity, and the relentless pursuit of excellence.
