The 10th edition of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon concluded in spectacular fashion on Saturday, with Kenya’s Edwin Kibet emerging as the champion. Despite arriving in Nigeria just a day before the race, at approximately 6:00 PM, Kibet defied the odds and put up a stunning performance to clinch victory.
Kibet crossed the finish line in an impressive time of 2 hours, 14 minutes, and 18 seconds (unofficial time), showcasing remarkable endurance and strength. His victory secures him the grand prize of $50,000, adding his name to the elite list of champions of the prestigious marathon.
Nyango Gyang Boyi Shines as First Nigerian to Finish
Nigeria also had its moment of celebration as Nyango Gyang Boyi became the first local athlete to finish the race, making history by securing a place in the top 10. Boyi clocked 2 hours, 25 minutes, and 41.58 seconds, earning him an overall 8th-place finish—a feat that puts him among the best in the international field.
His stellar performance ensured he didn’t just walk away with the $4,000 prize for his placement but also the coveted ₦2 million reward for being the first Nigerian to cross the finish line. His achievement highlights the growing potential of Nigerian long-distance runners on the global stage.
Ethiopia’s Guta Meseret Hirpa Dominates Women’s Race
In the women’s category, Ethiopia maintained its dominance as Guta Meseret Hirpa powered to victory, clinching her maiden Access Bank Lagos City Marathon title. Hirpa crossed the finish line in 2 hours, 37 minutes, and 4.08 seconds (unofficial time), leading an Ethiopian 1-2 finish.
Her compatriot finished in second place, while a Kenyan runner secured the third position, making it another successful outing for East African athletes, who have traditionally dominated long-distance races.
Governor Sanwo-Olu, Top Dignitaries Grace the Marathon
The event saw the active participation of top government officials, including the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who took part in the ceremonial race to the finish line alongside his deputy, Dr. Femi Hamzat.
Also present at the prestigious sporting event was the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, who joined dignitaries and thousands of spectators at Eko Atlantic City, the venue of the marathon’s grand finish.
