In a groundbreaking initiative to enhance the prospects of young athletes, Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Hon. Mobolaji Ogunlende, has successfully facilitated a collaboration with the National Football League (NFL). This effort aims to identify and nurture football talent in Lagos and across Africa.

The strategic partnership began in January 2024 when Commissioner Ogunlende hosted an American NFL delegation. The delegation toured Lagos State’s sports facilities, paving the way for this unprecedented collaboration. The visit underscored the state’s commitment to developing world-class sports infrastructure and providing its youth with global opportunities.

On Monday, June 17, 2024, Hon. Ogunlende announced through his social media platforms that the NFL team had completed an extensive five-day recruitment process. This rigorous selection event spanned Lagos and twelve other African countries, culminating in the identification of eight outstanding players. Two of these talented athletes hail from Lagos, while the remaining six represent various other nations on the continent.

The following day, on June 18, 2024, Hon. Ogunlende introduced the NFL delegation to the Governor of Lagos State at the state house in Marina. This presentation marked a significant milestone in Lagos’s sports development agenda, highlighting the state’s proactive efforts to create international opportunities for its youth.

In his remarks, Commissioner Ogunlende expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership and the broader vision it represents. “This collaboration with the NFL is a testament to our commitment to inclusivity and providing ample opportunities for our youth. We are dedicated to empowering our young athletes and showcasing their potential on an international level,” he stated.

The partnership with the NFL is expected to open new avenues for young athletes in Lagos, offering them the chance to develop their skills and pursue professional careers in American football. This initiative is part of a broader effort by the Lagos State administration to foster an environment where every young person can thrive and achieve their full potential.
