The Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mr. Idris Aregbe, on Thursday, played host to the leadership of the Adire Sector of the National Union of Textile, Garment and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria (NUTGWN), led by its Chairman, Comrade Ibrahim Adebayo Lawal, at his office in Alausa, Ikeja.
The courtesy visit, which included executive members of the union, was centered on forging stronger collaboration with the Lagos State Government in promoting Adire and other indigenous fabrics as part of efforts to preserve Nigeria’s cultural heritage and expand opportunities within the creative economy.
In his remarks, Comrade Lawal commended Lagos State for consistently positioning itself as Africa’s creative hub and sought partnership on key initiatives that would empower young people through job creation in the textile value chain. He also highlighted the union’s upcoming programmes, including the proposed Adire Carnival and the Annual Textile Union Educational Conference scheduled for November in Kaduna, where he appealed for Lagos State’s sponsorship of delegates.
Responding, Mr. Aregbe assured the delegation of the Ministry’s unwavering support, noting that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration is committed to advancing the cultural and creative sector as a driver of economic growth. He emphasized that Adire remains a symbol of Nigeria’s cultural identity and that the state will continue to champion policies and partnerships that uplift local artisans, encourage innovation, and open up new markets for indigenous fabrics.
“Lagos will always be at the forefront of promoting our cultural heritage while also using the creative economy as a tool for youth empowerment and sustainable development,” Aregbe said.
The meeting ended with both parties pledging to work closely in actualizing initiatives that will spotlight Lagos as a hub for African creativity, fashion, and textile excellence.
