The Lagos State Red Line Rail officially commenced commercial operations today, marking a major milestone in the state’s transportation infrastructure. The new rail system will transport passengers from Agbado to Oyingbo, offering an efficient and convenient alternative for daily commuters across the city.
In a speech delivered at the launch, Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, expressed his excitement, noting the significance of the occasion. “Today marks the beginning of commercial operations for the Lagos Metropolitan Red Line (LMRT), with passenger services now running from Agbado to Oyingbo. We are on a mission to keep Lagos moving, and this Red Line is a key component of our broader vision to establish a seamlessly connected city,” Sanwo-Olu said.
He highlighted that the Red Line is the second major rail system in Lagos to become operational in less than two years, following the launch of the Blue Line. The Governor added that this achievement demonstrates the government’s commitment to addressing transportation challenges in Africa’s largest megacity.
The 27-kilometer Red Line, which spans eight stations, connects key locations including Oyingbo, Yaba, Mushin, Oshodi, Ikeja, Agege, Iju, and Agbado. It is projected to transport up to 500,000 passengers daily once the schedule is fully ramped up, helping to reduce road traffic and improve the ease of commuting for Lagosians.
According to the operational schedule, the first train departs from Agbado at 6:00 AM each day, while another train leaves Iju Station at 7:30 AM. Passengers are required to use their Cowry Card, the official ticketing system, to access the service.
Governor Sanwo-Olu also emphasized the need for Lagosians to take collective responsibility in safeguarding the new rail infrastructure. “As with the Blue Line and all other public assets, this project belongs to all of us. We must treat it with care and respect. Vandalism or any form of disruption will not be tolerated. Together, we can ensure that our trains remain a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone,” he stated.
Concluding his remarks, the Governor urged residents to embrace the Red Line as part of the state’s ongoing efforts to modernize its public transportation system. “Together, let’s keep Lagos moving forward,” he affirmed.
The launch of the Red Line underscores the Lagos State Government’s commitment to expanding its transport network and providing sustainable solutions to the city’s growing population. With the introduction of this rail line, daily commuters now have a more reliable and efficient way to navigate the busy metropolis.
