In a groundbreaking move to tackle the growing waste management challenges in the state, the Lagos State Government, under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has signed a strategic partnership agreement with ZoomLion Nigeria, a subsidiary of the renowned Jospong Group. This collaboration marks a significant milestone in the government’s commitment to modernizing and strengthening the waste management system across Lagos.
Speaking during the signing ceremony, Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted the urgency of the initiative, stating:
“Lagos produces around 13,000 tonnes of waste every single day. That’s a huge number, and it’s clear we need stronger systems in place to deal with it. This partnership aims to address that.”
As part of the agreement, Lagos State will construct a new Transfer Loading Station at the Olusosun dumpsite, paving the way for the eventual decommissioning of the site, which has long been a symbol of urban waste accumulation. From Olusosun, approximately 2,500 tonnes of waste will be redirected daily to a new state-of-the-art Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in Ikorodu.
In a similar development, the Solous III dumpsite in Igando will see the construction of another MRF, with 1,500 tonnes of waste to be transferred daily to a recovery center in Badagry. These facilities are expected to drastically improve the efficiency of waste collection, sorting, and recycling efforts across the state.
Governor Sanwo-Olu also revealed new innovations aimed at improving access to waste collection services in hard-to-reach areas:
“We’re also introducing self-tipping tricycles to help with waste collection in areas that are harder to access both within the city and its outskirts.”
Beyond environmental impact, the initiative is projected to generate significant economic benefits. The partnership is expected to create over 5,000 direct and indirect job opportunities for Lagosians, further contributing to the state’s socio-economic development.
Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the broader vision driving the project, saying:
“We are taking steps in the right direction—towards cleaner streets, better health, and a more livable Lagos for all of us.”
This partnership reflects the Lagos State Government’s proactive approach to urban sustainability, positioning the state as a leader in innovative and inclusive environmental management solutions in Africa.
