Lagos state governorship election of 18th March, 2023 has served as a means of electing a capable and competent governor for the state, in the same vein the election has also taught us some lessons by waking up our ideas in order to know what is worth.
The first lesson I learnt is that calmness should not be mistaken for stupidity, Yoruba’s might be calm, accommodating, peaceful but they are not not stupid. when you see a calm beehive, do not poke it because the bees are protecting their queen, that’s why they are calm. If you poke the beehive with a stick, those calm bees will surely react and they will sting. If a river surface is still and calm, it doesn’t mean that the water is shallow; or it doesn’t abode crocodiles or dangerous creatures. If you jump into such river it will not have a happy ending. Another important lesson learnt is that Yoruba people do not eat with the left hand, they rather use the left hand to hold an important lesson.
Once upon a time, there is a man called Jenkinson who is a great warrior, he suggested to his followers that he wants to conquer a particular city, so Jenkinson and his followers went to the city for region battle, unfortunately for him they were unable to enter the city, this made Jenkinson wrote a letter to the city warriors that if they can surrender to him he will grant them amnesty and other favours, reacting to Jenkinson letter these warriors splitted, some are willing to take Jenkinson side while the rest are ready to fight Jenkinson for their city. When Jenkinson heard about the splitting he wrote another letters ordering those warriors on his side to kill those that are not will to surrender, those warriors that are willing to surrender listened to Jenkinson and killed those warriors that refused to surrender, after the whole fight Jenkinson came into the city and ordered his own follower to kill the remaining warriors of that city because they are not to be trusted, he said, “they betrayed their brothers so if I spare them they will definitely betray me too one day” i urge us to learn from this story, no matter how bad our own is, we can’t afford to betray them because if we do it will cost us high. The final lesson I learnt from this election is that we should teach our children to speak our indigenous language properly if not all at least to a large extent because your indigenous languages will always be useful, if you want your children to be accepted as a leaders in the community, they will need that language. You cannot think in other people’s language and speak poorly in our own language, yet you expect us to accept you as our leader, No I don’t think so.
