Meet the 20 year old Nigerian-born London-based artist who design the new Brit Award Statuette.

The 43rd edition of the Brit Awards was hosted by a British comedian, Mo Gilligan on February 11, 2023 at the O2 Arena in London. The ceremony which is organised to recognise the best in British and international music gave out a honorary Statuettes designed by a Nigerian-born London-based artist, Olaolu Slawn.

Here are eight facts you need to know about Olaolu Slawn:

1. Olaolu is from Nigeria and was born in Lagos, he hails from the South-west, yoruba tribe precisely.

2. He is 20-year-old.

3. He has become the first Nigerian-born and youngest artist to design the BRITs Award.

4. He once worked as a shop assistant at Wafflesncream, Nigeria’s first skate shop, before moving to London in 2018 where he enrolled at Middlesex University to study graphic design in 2019.

5. He started his painting career in 2019 during the lock down period.

6. He hosted his debut exhibition at Brick Lane’s Truman Brewery in 2021 which brought an attention in the art scene.

7. He is well known for his spray-painted, pop art canvases and murals.

8. Slawn has his own fashion brand, Motherlan, with fellow skaters and friends, which has become known for its bold graphics, animated characters and slogans such as “join the cult”.
