The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced a comprehensive plan to revitalize and expand the country’s Primary HealthCare Centres (PHCs), with a significant investment of N260 billion. This initiative aims to enhance the quality and accessibility of essential health services across the nation.
The revitalization program will address the current needs of existing PHCs and significantly expand their number from 8,300 to 17,000.
This ambitious project is being spearheaded by the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) and is designed to make these centers fully functional, ensuring they can deliver essential health services effectively.
The funds for this program have been sourced from the International Development Association (IDA) and the Basic HealthCare Provision Fund (BHCPF).
These funds have been allocated to all states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), ensuring a nationwide impact. The federal government will provide states with strict guidelines to ensure the successful implementation of the PHC revitalization program.
In addition to infrastructure improvements, the Federal Government is committed to enhancing the workforce within the healthcare sector. Over the next three years, a targeted training program will be implemented to train 120,000 frontline health workers.
This initiative is a critical component of the broader strategy to revive basic healthcare services and ensure that skilled professionals are available to meet the health needs of the population.
This revitalization and expansion project underscores the government’s dedication to improving healthcare delivery and outcomes.
By bolstering the primary healthcare infrastructure and workforce, Nigeria aims to make significant strides toward universal health coverage and improved public health standards.
