The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has officially disclaimed a statement purportedly issued on its behalf by John Aikpokpo-Martins and Funmi Adeogun, allegedly representing the NBA-Section on Public Interest and Development Law (NBA-SPIDEL). The NBA clarifies that this statement was neither authorized nor endorsed by the association.
In a strong reaction, the NBA has stressed that neither Aikpokpo-Martins nor Adeogun holds the authority to issue any statements on behalf of NBA-SPIDEL or any other section of the NBA. The NBA National Executive Council had removed the Executive Members of SPIDEL, including Aikpokpo-Martins and Adeogun, on February 29, 2024, and replaced them with a Caretaker Committee.
The removal also included other members such as Princess Frank-Chukwuani, Chinedu Obienu, Abdullahi Karaye, Charity Ibezim, Dr. Monday Ubani, Prof. Paul Ananaba SAN, Kunle Adegoke SAN, Uju Agomoh Esq, Kunle Edun Esq, Okey Ohagba Esq, Yakubu Bawa Esq, Dorn-Claimz Enamhe Esq, Igbeaku Evulukwu Esq, Chinelo Ofoegbunam Esq, Sam Ajayi Jaiye Esq, and Chisom Onuoha Esq. Aikpokpo-Martins and Adeogun, who have since challenged their removal in court, are fully aware of this decision.
The current Caretaker Committee for NBA-SPIDEL comprises:
1. Sir Steve Adehi, SAN – Chairman
2. Yakubu Philemon, SAN – Alternate Chairman
3. Ben Oji – Secretary
4. Ronke Adeyemi – Member
5. Eva Amadi – Treasurer
The NBA urges the public to disregard any statements issued by Aikpokpo-Martins and Adeogun on behalf of NBA-SPIDEL, labeling their actions as misrepresentation and misconduct.
In response to the issuance of the Central Motor Registry Information System (CMRIS) certificate by the Nigeria Police Force, the NBA acknowledges the need for a critical reconsideration of this levy, given the existing financial burdens on Nigerian citizens and businesses. To address concerns about multiple taxations and economic challenges, the NBA is organizing a conference on July 18, 2024, themed “Tax, Tariffs and the Taxpayer: Exploring the Impact on the Public and Economy.”
NBA President Mr. Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau, OON, SAN, has initiated dialogue with the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force regarding the new levy and plans to engage with the Inspector General of Police and, if necessary, the Presidency, to reconsider policies imposing additional financial burdens on Nigerians.
