Nigeria: Renewed Hope or Renewed Doubts? Why Political Loyalty Must Matter in Strategic Appointments

In politics, perception is often as powerful as policy. A single public appearance can shape narratives, influence international opinion, and define the credibility of a government. This reality was once again illustrated during the globally recognized Head to Head program hosted by Mehdi Hassan on Al Jazeera, where the spokesperson of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Daniel Bwala, appeared to defend the administration.

There is no doubt that Daniel Bwala is an intelligent, articulate, and confident communicator. During the program he demonstrated competence, composure, and a strong ability to express his views. However, despite his personal abilities, his political past inevitably followed him into the debate, creating a situation where his previous positions weakened the credibility of the message he was sent to deliver.

The issue was not necessarily about competence. It was about consistency, ideological conviction, and political loyalty.

For years before his appointment, Bwala had been a strong critic of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress. Those past statements are well documented in the public domain. During the debate, the program host skillfully referenced those earlier positions, using them to question the sincerity and stability of Bwala’s current defense of the administration.

The implication was clear. When a government appoints someone who was recently an outspoken critic to represent it at the highest level, the opposition and international commentators will inevitably question the credibility of that messenger.

This moment provides an important lesson for the leadership of the All Progressives Congress and the Tinubu administration.

Political parties are built on loyalty, sacrifice, and ideological commitment. Long before electoral victories are secured, thousands of party faithful invest their time, energy, and reputation defending the movement during difficult times. These loyalists stand by the party when it is unpopular, when criticism is intense, and when political survival is uncertain.

However, in many political environments, once victory is achieved, those who fought the battles are often sidelined, while individuals who previously opposed the party suddenly emerge in strategic and sensitive positions.

Such decisions can create deep frustration among party faithful. More importantly, they can weaken the moral authority of those chosen to speak for the government.

When individuals whose political positions have shifted dramatically are appointed to sensitive communication or policy roles, the risk is not merely internal dissatisfaction within the party. The larger danger is credibility. Opponents will always remind the public of those past criticisms and contradictions, thereby undermining the government’s message.

Political reconciliation and inclusiveness are important tools of governance. Bringing former opponents into a broader national coalition can help reduce tension and strengthen democracy. However, reconciliation must be balanced with political wisdom.

Not every position should be used as a tool for reconciliation.

Roles that shape national messaging, defend government policies, and represent the administration on global platforms require individuals whose loyalty and ideological commitment cannot easily be questioned. Such positions should ideally be occupied by individuals who have consistently believed in the party’s philosophy and leadership.

This is not about exclusion. It is about strategic thinking.

A political movement becomes stronger when loyalty, consistency, and dedication are recognized and rewarded. When party faithful see that years of sacrifice are acknowledged, their commitment deepens and the party’s internal cohesion grows stronger.

On the other hand, when individuals who only recently joined the political camp are placed in positions of prominence, it can send a discouraging message to long standing supporters who carried the party through its most challenging moments.

The lesson from the Al Jazeera encounter is therefore broader than a single television debate. It is a reminder that political messaging must be backed by credible messengers. The strength of any administration lies not only in its policies but also in the people chosen to defend those policies.

For President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the leadership of the APC, the Renewed Hope agenda requires not just bold reforms and strategic governance, but also careful political management within the party itself.

Appointments should reflect trust, loyalty, ideological clarity, and a proven record of commitment to the movement.

Those who stood firmly with the party when it was politically difficult should not be forgotten once power is secured. They represent the backbone of the political structure that made victory possible.

If the APC truly seeks to sustain the spirit of Renewed Hope, it must ensure that loyalty is not treated as expendable. A political party that rewards commitment will always remain strong, united, and credible.

Anything less risks turning renewed hope into renewed doubt.
