In a strategic move to align with Nigeria’s evolving sports policies, the Joint Technical Committee for the 22nd National Sports Festival, initially slated for December 2024, has announced a rescheduling of the event to May 16–30, 2025.
The decision was formalized in a communiqué jointly signed by the Director General of the National Sports Commission, Hon. Adebukola Olopade, and the Ogun State Commissioner for Sports Development, Hon. Wasiu Isiaka. The adjustment is aimed at incorporating key recommendations from the technical review conducted by the committee and ensuring the festival reflects the federal government’s broader vision for sports development and economic sustainability.
As part of the revised schedule, zonal eliminations for team sports will now take place earlier, from February 23–28, 2025. This timeline is designed to allow sufficient preparation and create a more inclusive and competitive environment for all participating teams.
The Joint Technical Committee expressed its gratitude to the Federal Government for its commitment to transforming Nigeria’s sports landscape, particularly through the establishment of a specialized Commission for sports management. The committee also commended the Ogun State Government and its residents for their unwavering support, along with private sector contributors like Babcock University and Chief Kunle Soname, whose efforts have significantly boosted the festival’s preparations.
Speaking after the announcement, Hon. Adebukola Olopade highlighted the importance of the rescheduling in achieving a more impactful and innovative festival. “The additional five months will allow us to not only enhance organizational efficiency but also integrate sustainable economic practices into the festival. This is a step forward in showcasing Nigeria’s capacity to host world-class sporting events,” he stated.
The Ogun 2024 National Sports Festival, now set for May 2025, promises to be a transformative event, celebrating athletic excellence while advancing Nigeria’s sports and economic development agenda.
