In a move that has sent shockwaves through the Ogun State political landscape, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has ratified the suspension of Senator Gbenga Daniel, a former governor of the state and one of its most influential figures, alongside Hon. Kunle Folarin, over allegations of anti-party activities.

Senator Gbenga Daniel.

The decision, announced in a statement signed by the party’s Director of Publicity, Nuberu Olufemi, followed the recommendations of disciplinary committees set up by their respective wards in Sagamu Local Government Area. The Ogun APC State Working Committee (SWC), chaired by Chief Yemi Sanusi, deliberated on the reports during its August 19 meeting, which was attended by 16 members.

According to the report, Senator Daniel (Ward 4) and Hon. Folarin (Ward 6) were accused of gross misconduct, ranging from failure to abide by party directives to allegedly working against the interest of the APC during recent political activities. Both men were invited in writing to appear before their ward disciplinary panels to defend themselves but reportedly ignored the invitations, neither attending nor submitting written defenses.

Instead, the committees alleged that the duo used their political clout to intimidate party members, discouraged cooperation with the investigations, and attempted to suppress petitions filed against them. “In light of these developments, the committees resolved to suspend the members indefinitely, pending further investigation,” the statement noted.

A Heavyweight’s Fall from Grace?

The suspension of Senator Daniel, fondly called “OGD” in Ogun politics, is particularly significant. A two-term former governor (2003–2011) under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Daniel joined the APC in 2021 after years of political realignment. His defection was widely hailed as a boost to the ruling party, given his formidable grassroots network and enduring influence in Ogun East.

However, the recent development highlights the often delicate balance between old power blocs and new alignments within the APC. Analysts believe the suspension could deepen internal fissures as the party prepares for future elections, including the critical 2027 governorship contest.

“This is not just about discipline—it’s about who controls the soul of the party in Ogun State,” said a political analyst in Abeokuta. “Daniel’s suspension signals that the APC leadership is willing to draw the line, no matter how big the name involved.”

Implications for Ogun APC Unity

For Hon. Kunle Folarin, a grassroots politician with considerable support in Sagamu, the suspension is equally consequential. His ward-level influence has long been seen as a bridge between the APC and young voters in the area. Critics argue that alienating him could further fragment the party’s base in Ogun East, traditionally a hotly contested zone.

The suspensions also raise questions about the APC’s cohesion heading into the next electoral cycle. Ogun State has historically been a battleground, with strong PDP, APC, and other third-force presences. With Senator Daniel’s suspension, observers suggest the PDP and other opposition groups may seize the moment to woo disgruntled APC factions.

APC’s Message of Party Discipline

Despite the political ripples, the Ogun APC insists the decision underscores its commitment to discipline and the supremacy of its constitution. The party stressed that no individual, regardless of stature, would be allowed to undermine its unity or processes.

“The suspension shows that the APC is serious about internal discipline,” the statement added. “It is not about personalities; it is about protecting the integrity of our party.”

What Next for Daniel and Folarin?

For Senator Daniel, the suspension poses a critical test of political survival. Having transitioned from the PDP to APC in a bid to remain relevant in the ruling structure, the development now places him at a crossroads. Will he fight his suspension from within, seek reconciliation, or once again explore political alternatives?

For the APC, the challenge lies in managing the fallout and ensuring that the disciplinary action does not snowball into wider defections or cracks ahead of 2027.
