ỌMỌ IBADAN TIO JALE, OJU LORỌ

Even after explaining the meaning of “ỌMỌ IBADAN TIO JALE, OJU LORỌ,” which people often use to criticise Ibadan, some still refuse to believe it. It’s puzzling why they cling to negative remarks, especially those who live in Ibadan. How can you have that notion about a city that accommodates you? A city where you have your home, job, and family?

Some even said after justifying that, how about this, “Ibi Ole ti gben jare oloun, Iwo na se gbe beun”?

My reply:

I don’t know the story behind iwọ na ṣe gbe bẹun. However, iwọ na ṣe gbe bẹun is most likely to be a remark for some whose stuff was stolen after putting the stuff in a ridiculous place. Imagine placing your phone on a random table in the motor park and it’s gone before you return. The next people would ask before looking for the thief is “Why would you put it there?” Iwọ na ṣe gbe bẹun?

When people say Iwọ na ṣe gbe bẹun? to me I tell them never to be careless with their stuff????

People should also note that these phrases are in the past tense, not continuous tense.

“Ibadan tio jale, oju lo n rọ” ❌

“Ibadan tio jale oju loro” ✅

“Ibi ole ti gben jare oloun” ❌

“Ibi ole ti gbe jare oloun” ✅ (there is a story for this which I just got to know and will be sharing soon)

Someone even said “Ọmọ ageṣin kole” ????

There’s the original Ibadan praise and then there are untrue ones born out of jẹalousy, mọckery, and past disputes. Every tribe has similar untrue praise, however, we don’t dwell on them in our relationships with other tribes.

I understand all these come from. Being the largest city and first in many things;

The first university in Nigeria

The first stadium in Africa

The first Television Station in Africa.

The First Skyscraper in Africa

The first teaching hospital in Nigeria

The oldest and surviving Newspaper in Nigeria.

The first zoological garden in Nigeria, etc

So it is natural for others to ẹnvy us. However, it’s not our fault, Ipin ni ????????

No matter what they say about us, IBADAN remains the city of all cities. West Africa’s largest city. The brown roof city! Where ancient and modern eras meet. Look at Ayẹyẹ, Agbeni, Oopo, etc, and then look at Oluyole estate, Jericho, Bodija, etc – all in one city!

Kudos to all Ibadan people ❤️????
