The latest session of The Renewed Hope Global Virtual Town Hall Conference was a highly enlightening and instructive event. Prince Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Police Public Relations Officer (FPPRO), stood in for the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun PhD, NPM, to address Nigerians globally on the impending protest and the Police Force’s strategies to ensure national peace and security.
Prince Adejobi began by expressing his gratitude to the conference organizers, highlighting the event’s timely nature given the current challenges in the country. He acknowledged the complexity of policing a nation as diverse as Nigeria, stating that it is no easy task. He agreed with the opening remarks on the inadequate police-to-population ratio but reassured participants that the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) is adopting modern policing strategies and digital innovations to align with global standards.
Throughout the conference, Prince Adejobi answered questions from viewers and participants comprehensively. He detailed the reforms introduced by the IGP, Dr. Egbetokun, such as enhanced training for officers, improved recruitment processes, specialized investigation units, and the acquisition ofi state-of-the-art equipment. He emphasized the recent decline in major crimes, with reported cases dropping from 734 in May to 416 in July. The Police Force’s efforts also resulted in 1,284 arrests, the recovery of 284 firearms, 6,702 rounds of ammunition, and 107 vehicles, as well as the rescue of 97 kidnapped victims.
A powerful video was shown during the conference, depicting the aftermath of the EndSARS protest in October 2020. The six-minute video contained graphic content illustrating the violent and destructive actions during the protest, serving as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of the current planned protest.
