The Presidency has expressed deep concern over the sudden proliferation of political billboards in parts of the country, particularly in Abuja and Kano, promoting the candidacy of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima for the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the Presidency observed that many of these billboards not only feature the images of President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima but also include those of the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, suggesting an orchestrated campaign for a second term in office.
While acknowledging the unwavering loyalty and enthusiastic support of Nigerians, Mr. Onanuga emphasized that President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima remain committed to upholding the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and do not endorse any activity that contravene the nation’s electoral laws.
“The Electoral Act clearly stipulates when campaigns for future elections can commence. Any form of premature campaign, such as these billboard advertisements, not only violates the law but also threatens the credibility and fairness of the democratic process,” the statement read.
According to the Presidency, neither President Tinubu nor Vice President Shettima has authorised or sanctioned any political campaign for the 2027 elections. The government reiterated that no individual, group, or organisation has been empowered to campaign on their behalf via any media platform, including outdoor advertising, print, broadcast, or digital channels.
Mr. Onanuga urged those sponsoring these unauthorised campaigns to halt their actions immediately, warning that continued violation of the law would not be condoned.
“The President and his Vice are fully engrossed in the business of governance and remain focused on delivering their Renewed Hope Agenda, which includes economic revitalisation, infrastructural renewal, social investment, improved security, and the development of human capital,” the statement continued.
The Presidency assured Nigerians that when the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officially announces the timetable for the 2027 elections, President Tinubu will personally address the nation and make his intentions known.
For now, the focus remains squarely on the mandate entrusted to the current administration: to build a stronger, safer, and more prosperous Nigeria.
