In a strategic move to strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare sector, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Dr. Ibrahim Yahaya Oloriegbe as the Chairman of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA). The appointment, which took effect on March 11, 2025, is for an initial tenure of four years.

Dr. Oloriegbe, a former Senator representing Kwara Central in the 9th National Assembly, brings a wealth of experience in health policy, legislative advocacy, and medical practice. As the former Chairman of the Senate Committee on Health, he played a pivotal role in advancing key healthcare reforms, including the expansion of health insurance coverage and improved funding for primary healthcare services.

A distinguished medical professional, Dr. Oloriegbe holds a Bachelor’s degree in Medicine and Surgery from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State. He further enhanced his expertise with a Master’s in Coaching and Consultation from the University of Oxford, UK, and HEC, Paris. His professional affiliations include the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), the Association of General and Private Medical Practitioners of Nigeria (AGPMPN), the Nigeria Venereal Disease Association, the Guild of Medical Directors of Nigeria, the International AIDS Society (IAS), and the Africa Health Leadership and Management Network.
With decades of experience in the medical field and legislative governance, Dr. Oloriegbe’s appointment is expected to drive the NHIA towards achieving the Federal Government’s goal of universal health coverage for all Nigerians. The NHIA, which oversees health insurance schemes and policies nationwide, plays a crucial role in ensuring affordable and accessible healthcare services.
The appointment reflects President Tinubu’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare system by placing seasoned professionals at the helm of critical institutions.
