In a strategic move aimed at bolstering the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), President Bola Tinubu has appointed Olatunji Bello as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Executive Vice-Chairman (EVC) of the commission. The appointment, however, remains subject to Senate confirmation.
The announcement was made through a formal statement by Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity. Ngelale highlighted Bello’s extensive background, noting his multifaceted expertise as a lawyer, administrator, and journalist.
“Olatunji Bello is a distinguished professional with a robust career trajectory,” Ngelale stated. “He is the former Secretary to the Lagos State Government and holds a Master’s degree in International Law and Diplomacy from the University of Lagos. His legal acumen is underscored by his education in Law at the same university, culminating in his call to the Nigerian Bar in 2002.”
Bello’s appointment comes at a crucial time for the FCCPC, an agency tasked with promoting fair competition and safeguarding consumer rights in Nigeria. His diverse background in law, governance, and media is expected to bring a dynamic and informed perspective to the commission’s leadership.
Observers and stakeholders within the industry have welcomed the appointment, expressing optimism that Bello’s leadership will enhance the effectiveness and reach of the FCCPC’s mandate. The Senate’s forthcoming confirmation process will be keenly watched, as Bello’s vision for the commission’s future is anticipated to shape key consumer protection policies and competition regulations in the country.
With a track record of public service and a reputation for integrity, Olatunji Bello’s new role is poised to significantly influence Nigeria’s regulatory landscape, promoting transparency and fairness in the marketplace.
