In a resounding show of appreciation for Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced an extraordinary reward package for the victorious D’Tigress, following their fifth consecutive triumph at the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship.
At a special reception held at the State House today, President Tinubu praised the team for bringing pride and glory to the nation, declaring that their historic achievement had further cemented Nigeria’s dominance in African women’s basketball.
Each player of the record-breaking D’Tigress team will receive a cash reward of $100,000, a brand-new apartment, and the prestigious National Honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON). The President emphasized that the gesture was not only a celebration of their success but also a motivation for other athletes to strive for excellence.
In recognition of their technical brilliance and leadership, each coach on the D’Tigress technical crew will also receive $50,000.
President Tinubu commended the players, coaches, and the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) for their resilience, team spirit, and commitment, noting that their back-to-back continental victories had placed Nigeria on the global basketball map.
“This reward is a token of the nation’s gratitude. You have lifted our flag high, inspired millions of Nigerians, and shown that with determination, we can remain champions in Africa and compete with the best in the world,” the President said.
D’Tigress recently defeated Mali 78–64 in the final to clinch their fifth straight AfroBasket Women’s title, an unprecedented achievement in the tournament’s history.
