President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is scheduled to embark on a strategic two-nation diplomatic tour on Thursday, August 14, 2025, aimed at deepening Nigeria’s economic partnerships, strengthening bilateral ties, and attracting fresh investments into the country.
According to a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the President will make a brief stopover in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, before proceeding to Japan, where he will participate in the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9). The summit will be held in Yokohama from August 20 to 22, under the theme “Co-create Innovative Solutions with Africa.”
TICAD9 will focus on Africa’s economic transformation through private sector-led growth, innovation, and institutional strengthening. Key discussions will centre on improving the business climate, fostering resilient and sustainable societies, and advancing human security, peace, and stability across the continent.
During his stay in Japan, President Tinubu will join other African leaders in high-level plenary sessions and engage in bilateral talks with government officials. He is also expected to meet with top executives from Japanese corporations with existing or potential investments in Nigeria, showcasing the country’s investment-friendly policies and economic reforms.
TICAD, launched in 1993 by the Japanese government in collaboration with the United Nations, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the African Union Commission, and the World Bank, is a triennial platform for policy dialogue between Africa and its development partners. The last edition was hosted in Tunisia in August 2022.
Upon conclusion of the Japan leg, President Tinubu will proceed to Brasilia, the capital of the Federative Republic of Brazil, for a two-day state visit from Sunday, August 24, to Monday, August 25, at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
In Brazil, the Nigerian leader will hold bilateral talks with President Lula da Silva, focusing on expanding economic, trade, and diplomatic relations. He will also participate in a Nigeria–Brazil Business Forum, engaging directly with Brazilian investors to explore opportunities in key sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, energy, and technology.
The visit will also provide a platform for both nations to sign agreements and Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) designed to enhance cooperation in mutually beneficial areas. President Tinubu will be accompanied by a high-powered delegation of ministers, senior government officials, and business leaders tasked with securing tangible outcomes from the trip.
Observers note that the twin visits underscore the Tinubu administration’s commitment to diversifying Nigeria’s international partnerships, driving foreign direct investment, and positioning the country as a hub for innovation and sustainable economic growth in Africa.
