President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to preside over a high-level Council of State meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Thursday, where key issues of national significance are expected to dominate discussions.

According to credible sources, one of the major highlights of the meeting will be the presentation of potential nominees to succeed Prof. Mahmood Yakubu as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The Council will deliberate on the candidates and offer advisory opinions as part of its constitutional role in guiding national leadership on sensitive matters.
The Council of State serves as one of Nigeria’s most respected advisory bodies, providing counsel to the President on policy direction, appointments, and governance challenges. Members include the President (Chairman), the Vice President (Deputy Chairman), all former Presidents and Heads of State, all former Chief Justices of Nigeria, the President of the Senate, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, all state governors, and the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation.
In a related development, President Tinubu will also chair the Police Council meeting, also scheduled for Thursday. The session will focus on discussions around the establishment of state police, security sector reforms, and other pressing issues affecting law enforcement and national security.
The meetings come at a crucial time as the administration intensifies efforts to strengthen democratic institutions, improve electoral integrity, and enhance national security through collaborative governance involving all tiers of leadership.
Both gatherings are expected to produce significant resolutions aimed at deepening Nigeria’s democratic governance and ensuring peace and stability across the country.
