Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to promoting clean energy by expanding the adoption of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as a sustainable and affordable alternative fuel. The Governor made this declaration during the launch of the Lagos State Government Pilot CNG Vehicle Conversion Training, organized by IBILE Oil & Gas Corporation (IOGC) at the Lagos Bus Service Limited Workshop in Yaba on Friday.
Speaking through the Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted that the adoption of CNG aligns with his administration’s vision for a “Greater Lagos,” driven by clean energy to power transportation, stimulate industrial innovation, and create job opportunities while preserving the environment.
Sanwo-Olu described the move as a strategic investment in energy security, environmental sustainability, and economic empowerment. He emphasized that CNG significantly reduces carbon emissions, enhancing air quality and mitigating the effects of climate change. Economically, he noted, it provides a cost-effective alternative to traditional fuels, easing the financial burden on citizens while unlocking opportunities for job creation and enterprise development.
“This initiative underscores our unwavering commitment to a cleaner, safer, and more affordable energy future for Lagosians. It is not just an energy solution; it is a bold step towards safeguarding our environment and ensuring the well-being of our people,” Sanwo-Olu remarked.
In her opening remarks, the Managing Director of IBILE Oil & Gas Corporation, Ms. Doyin Akinyanju, described the initiative as a landmark achievement in Lagos State’s journey towards sustainability. She explained that the program is designed to enhance the quality of life for current and future generations by driving cleaner, greener, and more efficient energy solutions, particularly in the transportation sector.
The training program, branded as a “Train the Trainers” initiative, aims to develop skilled manpower for CNG vehicle conversions, thereby supporting a seamless transition to cleaner energy. Ms. Akinyanju disclosed that the training would run until March 2025, with technical support from the state’s partner, Landirenzo, continuing for 12 to 18 months post-training.
The Managing Director revealed ambitious plans to establish critical CNG infrastructure in Lagos. By the end of the first quarter of 2025, four CNG refueling stations will be operational. These stations will be strategically located at:
–LAMATA Ojota Terminal and LAMATA Ajah Terminal to serve Lagos State Government’s incoming fleet of 2,000 CNG buses.
-LAWMA Ijora Depot to fuel CNG-powered waste management trucks.
-Yaba Terminal to cater to converted public vehicles.
Furthermore, Ms. Akinyanju announced plans to develop 11 additional CNG refueling stations across the state between Q3 2025 and Q1 2026, reinforcing Lagos as a leader in clean energy adoption in Nigeria.
The IBILE CNG initiative is a testament to Lagos State’s resolve to integrate innovative energy solutions into its economic framework. It reflects a commitment to energy diversification, environmental protection, and inclusive economic growth.
This forward-thinking initiative is expected to not only reduce Lagos’ carbon footprint but also bolster local enterprises, create job opportunities, and improve the overall quality of life for Lagos residents.
Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration has once again demonstrated its determination to lead the charge for a cleaner, greener, and more prosperous Lagos.
