Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, has announced her plan to contest the 2027 governorship election in Ogun State. She will run on the platform of the All Progressives Congress.
She made this known during an interview on Eagle7 Sports Radio 103.7FM, where she spoke openly about her return to politics after being away for about 15 years. Her decision has already generated strong reactions across the state and beyond.
Prof. Obasanjo recently rejoined the APC ahead of the next general elections. She completed her party registration in Ibogun, Ward 11, Ifo Local Government Area, officially returning to active political life in Ogun State.
She is not new to governance or public service. Between 2007 and 2011, she represented Ogun Central Senatorial District in the Senate. She also served as Commissioner for Health in Ogun State. After losing her re-election bid in 2011, she moved to the United States, where she focused on academics and later became a professor of epidemiology.
During the radio interview, she explained that her decision to return to politics was not sudden. According to her, a group of supporters had been encouraging her for about two years to come back and offer herself for leadership. Their constant pressure and belief in her capacity made her accept the call.
She said returning to her former party was not possible because of internal problems. Other parties were also considered, but she eventually settled for the APC, where most of her supporters are currently based. She stated that she feels comfortable in the party and has no issues with its leaders.
Prof. Obasanjo made it clear that she is not interested in going back to the Senate or accepting any appointed position. Her focus, she said, is strictly on becoming the governor of Ogun State.
Many observers see her ambition as timely. Since the era of Chief Olabisi Onabanjo, Ogun State has struggled to experience truly credible and people-centered leadership. There is growing public opinion that the state needs a governor with integrity, experience, and the courage to do things differently.
There is also a rising call to give women a fair chance in leading the state. Supporters believe that Ogun State may benefit from a woman’s leadership style, and many see Iyabo Obasanjo as a strong option with the background, exposure, and political experience to lead.
Her declaration signals the beginning of what is expected to be a highly competitive governorship race in 2027. The move was confirmed by Hon. Biodun Ajayi, a former chairman of Abeokuta South Local Government and a close associate of the Obasanjo family.
As the race unfolds, many eyes will be on Ogun State, where the demand for credible leadership and fresh ideas continues to grow.
