President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has signed into law a bill establishing the Federal University of Environmental Technology in Ogoni, Rivers State. The signing of the bill marks a significant milestone in the federal government’s commitment to advancing environmental studies and fostering development in the oil-rich Ogoni region.
The President’s approval comes just days after a crucial meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where he engaged in discussions with Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike, and prominent Ogoni leaders. The high-level meeting primarily focused on strategies for resuming oil exploration in Ogoniland, a region historically known for its environmental activism and calls for remediation following decades of oil-related pollution.
The newly established university is expected to serve as a center of excellence in environmental studies, petroleum technology, and sustainable development. It will have two campuses strategically located within Ogoni land, providing academic and research opportunities tailored to address the environmental challenges of the Niger Delta while equipping students with the necessary expertise to drive innovation in the sector.
Analysts see this development as a step toward addressing long-standing grievances in the region, particularly those concerning environmental degradation, economic marginalization, and the need for enhanced educational infrastructure. The university is also anticipated to play a key role in training the next generation of environmental scientists and engineers, positioning Nigeria as a leader in eco-friendly resource management.
Stakeholders in Ogoni, including traditional rulers and civil society groups, have welcomed the move, describing it as a significant gesture of the federal government’s commitment to development in the area. They, however, urged the government to ensure that the institution is well-funded and that its programs align with the needs of the local communities and industries.
With the establishment of the Federal University of Environmental Technology, Ogoni is set to become a hub for research, innovation, and sustainable development, reinforcing Nigeria’s commitment to balancing industrial growth with environmental stewardship.
