We’ve all done it. Bathroom break = phone break, but science says… it’s a terrible idea. Here’s why:
1, You’re basically bathing your phone in germs: Microbiologist Jason Tetro says phones carry hundreds of types of bacteria, fungi, and yeast. Now take that same phone into the toilet. Urinals, toilet seats, handles, taps… all crawling with germs. And when you flush? Tiny poop particles go airborne and land on everything. Including your phone. That warm phone in your hand? Perfect breeding ground. Then you use that same phone to eat, scroll, and text.
2, You’re wrecking your bum: Sitting on the toilet for 20, 30, even 40 minutes just to finish one TikTok scroll is not it. Dr. Partha Nandi, a gastro doctor, warns that sitting too long puts pressure on your rectum.
Result? Hemorrhoids, worse digestion issues, and problems going to the toilet later.
The bathroom isn’t for chilling. Go in, do your thing, and leave.
3, Your brain needs that break: Some of your best ideas don’t come when you’re typing emails. They come when your mind is bored. Productivity coach Peter Bregman puts it like this: “The worst thing for creativity is being on your phone in the bathroom.”
Those few minutes of boredom are when your brain wanders and solves the big problems. If you fill every quiet moment with scrolling, you rob yourself of that.
The toilet is for excretion business, not business emails and Instagram. Leave your phone outside. Wash your hands. Give your brain and your bum a break. Your health will thank you.
