Nigeria’s Super Eagles may soon have a consolation option after failing to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as reports suggest Russia is exploring the idea of hosting an alternative international tournament.
Though still unofficial, the proposal has quickly become one of the most discussed football topics this week. According to emerging information, Russia is considering organizing a summer competition in 2026 for national teams that missed out on World Cup qualification. The event would involve countries from various confederations that endured disappointing qualification campaigns.
While no formal list of participants has been released, media conversations have mentioned countries such as Serbia, Greece, Italy, Chile, Peru, Venezuela, Nigeria, Cameroon, Benin Republic, and China—nations with strong footballing reputations but no ticket to the World Cup jointly hosted by the U.S., Mexico, and Canada.
For Russia, the initiative holds importance beyond football. Since 2022, Russian teams have been barred from FIFA and UEFA competitions, prompting the country to seek new ways to retain a presence on the international stage.
Earlier this year, on June 6, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) arranged an international friendly with Russia, which ended in a 1–1 draw.
