The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced the approval of a 50% tariff adjustment for telecommunications operators across the country. The decision, which was disclosed in a statement on Monday, comes as a response to increasing operational costs and the need to sustain the telecom industry’s growth and efficiency.
The NCC emphasized that the approved adjustment is significantly lower than the over 100% tariff increase initially proposed by some network providers. The Commission explained that the decision reflects a balance between the financial sustainability of telecom operators and consumer protection, ensuring affordable services remain accessible to Nigerians.
Citing its regulatory mandate under Section 108 of the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003, the NCC reiterated its commitment to overseeing and approving tariff rates that promote a healthy and competitive telecommunications sector.
In the statement, the NCC noted, “The approved adjustment is aimed at addressing the significant gap between operational costs and current tariffs while ensuring that the delivery of services to consumers is not compromised. These adjustments will support the ability of operators to continue investing in infrastructure and innovation, ultimately benefiting consumers through improved services and connectivity, including better network quality, enhanced customer service, and greater coverage.”
The Commission further highlighted that the tariff adjustment is a necessary step to maintain the operational viability of telecom providers in the face of rising costs, particularly in areas such as energy, foreign exchange, and equipment procurement. It assured Nigerians that the increase had been carefully reviewed to prevent undue hardship while enabling the industry to thrive.
Industry stakeholders have lauded the NCC’s approach, describing it as a pragmatic measure that ensures the continued delivery of reliable telecom services without jeopardizing the interests of consumers. Observers also noted that the move would encourage investments in innovative solutions to expand network reach, especially in underserved and rural communities.
The NCC reaffirmed its commitment to monitoring the implementation of the new tariffs to ensure compliance and mitigate any potential consumer exploitation, reiterating that its focus remains on balancing affordability with sustainability in the telecommunications sector.
