BREAKING NEWS: Federal Government Suspends Import Duties On Key Food Items
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Whatsapp

In a significant policy shift aimed at bolstering food security and alleviating the rising cost of essential food items, the Federal Government has announced the suspension of duties, tariffs, and taxes on the importation of specific food commodities. This directive, which applies to imports via both land and sea borders, is expected to have an immediate impact on the availability and affordability of staple foods across the country.

The affected items include Maize, Husked Brown Rice, Wheat, and Cowpeas. These staples are crucial components of the Nigerian diet and the suspension of import duties is intended to ease the financial burden on consumers and support the nation’s agricultural sector.

This move is part of a broader strategy to combat inflation and ensure food stability in the wake of various economic challenges. By reducing the cost of importing these essential goods, the government aims to provide relief to households struggling with high food prices and to stabilize the market.

The suspension is expected to last for an initial period, during which the government will monitor its impact on prices and availability. Stakeholders in the agricultural and trade sectors have welcomed the announcement, expressing hope that it will lead to lower costs for consumers and stimulate economic activity.
