In a dramatic turn of events, the Lagos State House of Assembly has impeached its Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, amidst allegations of financial misconduct involving ₦43.5 billion. The funds in question were reportedly allocated for the procurement of backup vehicles for lawmakers, a move that has now come under intense scrutiny.

The decision to remove Obasa from his position was reached during a plenary session, following mounting pressure and calls for accountability. Sources within the Assembly revealed that a majority of lawmakers voted in favor of the impeachment, signaling their discontent with the Speaker’s handling of public funds.

In a swift transition, the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Mrs. Lasbat Meranda, representing Apapa Constituency 1, has been sworn in as the new Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. This historic move marks the first time a female lawmaker will preside over the Assembly, ushering in a new chapter in Lagos State’s legislative history.

Hon. Meranda, in her acceptance speech, pledged to prioritize transparency, accountability, and the welfare of Lagosians in her leadership. She assured members of the House and the public of her commitment to upholding the integrity of the Assembly.

Meanwhile, political observers and residents of Lagos await further developments, including the possibility of legal actions or investigations into the alleged misappropriation of funds. This impeachment has sparked widespread reactions, with many calling it a pivotal moment for governance and accountability in the state.

Stay tuned as more details emerge.
