Cameroon’s 92-year-old President, Paul Biya, has officially announced his candidacy for an eighth term in the October 2025 presidential election, potentially extending his rule to nearly 50 years.
Biya, in power since 1982, made the announcement via X (formerly Twitter), reaffirming his commitment to national stability despite growing domestic and international challenges.
His declaration comes amid rising concerns about his age, health, and leadership. Meanwhile, cracks are appearing in his ruling party as key allies including former Prime Minister Bello Bouba Maigari and ex-Minister Issa Tchiroma Bakary also have entered the race. Opposition figures Maurice Kamto and Cabral Libii have also declared their intentions.
Despite widespread discontent over unemployment, poor infrastructure, and ongoing unrest in English-speaking regions, the opposition remains divided. Candidates have until July 21 to declare.
If re-elected, Biya could remain in office until nearly 100, making him one of the world’s longest-serving leaders.
